COX Architecture's new Sydney studio in The Rocks presented a unique challenge: how to create a modern, flexible workspace while respecting the building's rich heritage. LCI's innovative lighting design, featuring Casambi smart lighting technology, provided the perfect solution.
The Brief: Balancing Heritage and Innovation
LCI was tasked with designing building services, including specialist lighting, for COX's new studio. The brief emphasized sustainability, agile working, and collaboration, all within the context of a historically significant building. COX envisioned a unifying space that fostered culture, offered flexibility for various work styles, encouraged visual connection, and celebrated the building's heritage. Preserving the building's historical character while meeting modern standards and future needs was paramount.

The Lighting Design: A Symphony of Light and Heritage
LCI's lighting design achieved several key objectives:
Highlighting Heritage: The design accentuates the building's original brickwork with strategically placed track wall washers, adding depth and visual comfort. Uplighting from the workspace tracks showcases the timber ceiling, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This indirect lighting approach promotes a human-centric environment focused on wellness and productivity.
Flexible Workspace: The studio's top floor is designed for adaptable workspaces and gatherings. Track lighting and spotlights illuminate task areas and highlight architectural features, while the Casambi lighting control system allows for customizable lighting scenes depending on the space's use.
Showcasing Projects: The studio functions as a gallery, displaying past and current projects. Flexible track lighting allows for easy adjustment and highlighting of models, installations, and display boards. On-site commissioning enabled fine-tuning of the lighting, ensuring each piece was perfectly illuminated.
Working with lighting integrator Afterglow Controls, LCI easily commissioned the system, from adding new lights to adjusting levels and creating scenes. Casambi's commitment to sustainable materials and the use of high-quality, long-lasting light fittings contribute to a reduced environmental footprint.
Why Casambi? The Power of Smart Lighting Control
Casambi's wireless lighting control system was integral to the project's success. Its benefits include:
Simplified Installation: Casambi minimized the need for extensive cabling, reducing building penetrations and protecting the heritage fabric.
Streamlined Commissioning: Working with lighting integrator Afterglow Controls, LCI easily commissioned the system, from adding new lights to adjusting levels and creating scenes.
Third-Party Integration: Casambi seamlessly integrates with other systems, such as AV, enhancing functionality and control.
Reduced Maintenance: Remote monitoring via a Casambi gateway provides valuable data and insights, simplifying maintenance and reducing site visits.
Energy Efficiency: Casambi motion sensors and lighting schedules minimize energy consumption.
Customer Benefits: Sustainability and Innovation
The project embodies sustainability through its location, promoting public transport use, and its integration of energy-efficient technologies. COX now has a dynamic, adaptable workspace that showcases their commitment to innovation. The Casambi system empowers them to demonstrate cutting-edge technology to clients and partners. The project's focus on minimizing impact on the heritage building and reducing embodied energy further underscores its sustainability credentials. Casambi's commitment to sustainable materials and the use of high-quality, long-lasting light fittings contribute to a reduced environmental footprint.
A Bright Future for COX Architecture
LCI's lighting design for COX Architecture's Sydney studio demonstrates the power of smart lighting to transform spaces. By blending heritage preservation with modern functionality and sustainable practices, the studio provides an inspiring and productive environment for its occupants. The integration of Casambi technology ensures that the space can adapt and evolve for years to come.
