Case Study: Replacing an End-of-Life Smart Lighting System in a Bondi Beach Apartment
Location: Bondi Beach, NSW
Type: High-end residential apartment
Size: 200sqm
Scope: Smart lighting retrofit
Rooms: 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms
Timeline: Interim solution prior to full refurbishment in 3–6 months
The Challenge: End-of-Life Smart Lighting System
The apartment’s existing lighting system was built around two DALI gateways integrated into a broader smart home setup. With the system nearing end-of-life, the client was experiencing increasing reliability issues and limited support for replacements or upgrades.
A full renovation was scheduled for later in the year, but the client needed a short-term solution to restore control and functionality in the interim — without significant disruption or cost.
Objectives:
Restore smart lighting control with minimal downtime
Avoid invasive rewiring or electrical works
Maintain compatibility with existing DALI-controlled luminaires
Provide a stable, user-friendly interface during the interim period
Solution:
After assessing the site and requirements, the decision was made to:
Replace the two legacy DALI gateways with a single Casambi Salvador 2000 unit
Retain and control the existing DALI lighting infrastructure
Introduce battery-powered wireless smart switches to provide manual control
Set up the system to support a future transition during the full refurbishment
The Casambi Salvador 2000 allowed for centralised control of multiple DALI lines from one point, with built-in DALI power supply and timeclock features for reliability.
Technical Challenges:
Combining DALI Lines: Merging two DALI lines into one Salvador unit introduced re-addressing complexity across all connected drivers.
Mesh Network Stability: Relying on battery-powered switches created isolated zones or “islands” in the Bluetooth mesh, reducing reliability in some areas.
Here's What We Learnt:
Avoid combining existing DALI lines when retrofitting, where possible. Re-addressing can be time-consuming and error-prone.
Maintain a strong mesh network using powered devices such as sensors, switches, or repeaters to support consistent performance.
Plan for scalability even when implementing temporary solutions. This allows for a smoother transition during future upgrades or renovations.
Outcome:
The retrofit successfully restored reliable lighting control throughout the apartment with minimal disruption. The new setup will serve as a stable interim system until the full renovation, where further enhancements and integrations can be planned.
