Science Gallery Museum
As part of the Global Science Gallery Network, the museum required a lighting system that could adapt to a constantly changing program of exhibitions and events. Casambi wireless lighting control provided a flexible, energy-efficient solution that supports both curatorial intent and everyday use.
A Multi-Functional Environment
Located at the University of Melbourne’s Carlton campus, the museum spans two levels and accommodates a range of uses. From café and bar areas to exhibition spaces and learning environments, each zone required lighting that could respond to different activities throughout the day.
Designed for Flexibility
- Café and bar areas with softer ambient lighting
- Exhibition spaces requiring adaptable lighting for displays and installations
- Learning areas supporting lectures, presentations, and group sessions
Wireless control allows each space to be adjusted independently, ensuring the right balance of brightness, colour temperature, and atmosphere.
Precision Lighting
The museum incorporates over 1,200 luminaires, including RGBW linear fittings and adjustable track lighting. This combination provides both general illumination and targeted lighting for artwork and installations.
In lower ground learning areas, curved linear luminaires create a continuous lighting effect, while modular zoning enables flexible control across different teaching and event formats.
Smart Control System
Casambi’s wireless system enables seamless control across the entire site, simplifying installation while allowing lighting scenes to be easily adjusted as exhibitions change. The system supports both operational efficiency and long-term flexibility.
The Result
The Science Gallery Museum demonstrates how intelligent lighting control can support dynamic environments, improving energy efficiency while enhancing the visitor experience across a wide range of spaces.
