COX Architecture Sydney Studio
COX Architecture’s new Sydney studio in The Rocks required a lighting approach that could balance heritage character with modern workplace needs. In collaboration with LCI, Casambi smart lighting control enabled a flexible, considered solution that supports both the building and the people within it.
The Brief
The project called for a sustainable, flexible workspace that encouraged collaboration while respecting the building’s heritage. COX envisioned a unified studio that could support multiple ways of working, showcase projects, and maintain a strong connection to the building’s original fabric.
Lighting Design
LCI’s lighting design focused on highlighting heritage elements while creating a comfortable, human-centred environment. Track wall washers bring out the texture of original brickwork, while uplighting reveals the timber ceiling, adding warmth and depth to the space.
The studio also functions as a gallery, with flexible track lighting allowing easy adjustment to suit models, installations, and display boards. On-site commissioning ensured each element was carefully tuned for clarity and visual balance.
Flexible Workspace
The top floor was designed to support a range of working styles, from focused tasks to larger gatherings. Casambi lighting control allows scenes to be adjusted depending on how the space is used, supporting a more adaptable and responsive environment.
Smart Lighting Control
Casambi’s wireless system simplified installation by reducing the need for extensive cabling, helping preserve the heritage structure. Working alongside Afterglow Controls, LCI commissioned the system efficiently, enabling quick adjustments, scene creation, and future flexibility.
Key Benefits
- Reduced cabling to protect heritage fabric
- Flexible lighting scenes for different work modes
- Seamless integration with other systems
- Remote monitoring for simplified maintenance
- Energy-efficient operation through sensors and scheduling
The Result
The studio blends heritage preservation with modern functionality, creating a flexible and inspiring workplace. With Casambi at its core, the space can adapt over time while maintaining a strong connection to its architectural context.
